Officials of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has finally made its presence felt at Jakniband on the NH66 to collect water samples from the Sal rivulet emitting foul odour since the last three months.
The GSPCB officials collected water samples from the rivulet to check the nature of effluents, with locals of Dramapur complaining of sewage odour emanating from the rivulet.
The action comes following a letter written by the Drampaur Sarpanch Avita Pereira to the authorities, including the GSPCB to collect the water samples and ascertain the nature of the pollutants.
Since water in the rivulet flows from Navelim before entering Jakniband in Dramapur village, the GSPCB officials were requested by Navelim Village Development Committee convenor Joao Souza to also collect water samples from the Navelim side of the rivulet.
Joao told the media that testing of the water samples from the Dramapur and Navelim side of the rivulet would give an indication over the source of the effluents discharged in the rivulet.
Local residents as well as motorists travelling on the NH66 have been complaining of sewage odour at the Jakniband culvert, demanding that the authorities, including the South Goa district Collector initiate to check the discharge of effluents into the rivulet.
