A joint inspection of the Dambabali Talli (water body) at Fatorda near the KTC bus stand was conducted by officials of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and the Margao Urban Health Centre to verify the complaints lodged by a local resident Nitin Nagwekar.
The inspection has found that sewage water has found its way into the water body, but the two agencies have decided to write to the Margao Municipality to find out the source of the sewage.
A GSPCB official confirmed that sewage water has found its way into the water body. He said the Board will write a letter to the Margao Municipal Council to verify the source of the sewage discharge.
Margao Urban Health Officer, Dr Succoro Quadros said the Health Centre will initiate action in the matter under the Public Health Act. “Notice will go to the owners suspected of discharging the building sewage water into the drain, which later found its way into the water body”, Dr Quadros said.
The complainant later told the media that his only purpose in lodging a complaint with the GSPCB and the Health centre is to ensure the cleanliness of Fatorda. “The water body has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other vector-borne diseases, he said, adding that he would also write to the MMC to tackle the waste problem in the locality.
