Goa University Vice-Chancellor Varun Sahni on Friday said that GU is exploring the possibility of having student representation on the varsity's Academic Council.
Sahni was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Post-Graduate Students Union for the academic year 2017-18.
Speaking further, he said, "At the moment we (academic council) are actively considering what type of student representation we can actively have within the academic council itself. If there are items which are confidential in which students cannot be involved, we'll break the meeting in two parts - part A in which students can participate and part B in which students cannot participate. This is done by other universities too."
Stating that he will look at the issues raised by students in an authentic and a genuine way, Sahni said, "We have already started to see how we can bring students into the governance procedures of the University."
We are not doing it because of students' demand, but suo motu. We think it's important."
Speaking earlier, newly elected Post-Graduate Students' Union President Gaurav Phadte informed about the various activities taken up by the Union. Speaking further he urged GU to resolve various issues related to the student community.
"We believe that any governance which actively involves student representatives in the decision making process will have a positive impact on everybody," he pointed out.
"As far as revaluation of answer papers is concerned, we are currently paying RS 500 per paper. There are still some students who cannot afford it. Secondly, there are many students who participate in various activities
related to art and culture. GU should look at considering these marks in academics too", he urged.
