PANAJI: Goa University suspended Executive Engineer from its technical division, Amit Srivastava, from the day of his arrest by the Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Directorate of Vigilance in a bribery case.
Speaking to The Goan, GU registrar YV Reddy confirmed the suspension and stated, "Srivastava was suspended immediately on the same day after his arrest by the ACB."
According to ACB, Srivastava had reportedly demanded bribe from Hema Sundar Reddy, owner of Panorama Enterprises, a housekeeping agency, which had bagged the contract with the Goa University campus buildings.
Srivastava was caught red-handed by ACB on April 5 at Dona Paula while accepting the bribe amount of Rs 50,000. Srivastava had allegedly demanded a bribe to the tune of five per cent of the billing amount of the agency.
Based on a complaint lodged by Gopi Peket, a contractor working with the housekeeping agency, ACB registered the FIR against Srivastava under the Prevention of Corruption Act. A trap was laid and the accused was arrested after he was caught red-handed.
Meanwhile, accused Srivastava has secured bail from the Panaji Sessions Court on Wednesday. During the arguments on the bail application, Srivastava's legal counsel argued that his client could lose his job if he doesn't report to work immediately, raising questions about whether or not Srivastava was served the suspension order which was issued on April 5.
