South Goa District Collector Dr Tariq Thomas on Tuesday chaired a meeting with officials of the Sewerage department, Water Resources department and the Salcete Mamlatdar as Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa led a delegation of local residents to the district Collector to complain of the stinking environment in the water body around the Nuvem-Davondem lake due to sewage discharge.

Following a representation made by the Nuvem MLA, Salcete Mamlatdar John Fernandes inspected the site behind the Activa showroom and ordered the release of the water from the Bhokti pond at Nuvem to give relief to the residents affected by the sewage odour.

The district Collector is believed to have directed the WRD as well as the sewerage department to test the water samples, apparently to find out the extent of water pollution.

Earlier in the day, the Nuvem MLA called on the district Collector and handed over a memorandum with a request to release water from the Bhokti pond at

Nuvem.

The MLA made the request after local residents submitted a memorandum with a plea to the authorities to release the water from the Pond as the stench emanating from the pond has left many a people affected by illness.

The residents had contended that the situation may give rise to an epidemic if water from the pond was not released and prove fatal to the local populace.
