The Goa Medical College and Hospital will soon offer free infertility treatment to women, who have uptil now, had to go out of the state to avail of these treatments, while spending a bomb.
The Gynaecology Department of the GMC will offer IUI (intrauterine insemination) within the next 30 days, while IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) will be available for free within the next four to six months, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane informed on Tuesday.
“Women who can’t conceive spend lakhs on these treatments out of the state, even though there is no guarantee they will work,” said Rane. “So we’ve tied up with the The Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), who will help us set up these facilities at the GMC, as well as offer training to our doctors,” he said.
Both, IUI and IVF are assisted reproductive techniques.
In the IUI procedure, sperm is treated and put directly in the uterine cavity, while in IVF, the sperm and ovum are taken, fused outside the body, and once it reaches a certain stage, the embryo is transplanted inside the female body. Both modalities have different indications, but similar success rates, i.e. around 30-40%. Around 20% of women face infertility.
FOGSI is linked to 241 gynaec societies and 35,000 gynaecologists in the country.
Meanwhile, Rane also informed that FOGSI will help GMC in other areas including detecting high risk pregnancies, making child birth a safe experience, encouraging and promoting breastfeeding, ensuring abortion is safe and accessible and opposing and condemning female foeticide.
