The gusty winds and rains on Thursday night caused a huge loss to the Electricity Department with poles and trees coming crashing down in several parts of the State. The department workers had to toil overnight to restore power till Friday noon.
The highest damage was reportedly caused in the Sattari taluka. Damage was also recorded in areas of Mapusa, Sankhali, Valpoi, Pernem and Mormugao as rainfall along with the gusty winds wreaked havoc.
Around 15 electricity poles and wires were damaged in areas including Valpoi, Benaulim, Betalbatim, Varca, Chinchinim, Cortalim, Khorlim, and Kundain as trees came down crashing on poles and wires.
Chief Electrical Engineer Stephen Fernandes informed that the electricity department staff worked overnight to restore power by Friday noon.
The electrical poles collapsed in many areas due to heavy rains and gusty winds. The IMD forecast stated that the sky will be clear after Friday.
Maximum rainfall of 28.8 mm was recorded in Dabolim in the last 24 hours.
"The electricity workers operated the whole night to restore electricity. Wherever there was a small damage, the power was restored with minor repair. In some places, damaged poles had to be replaced, which took time. The fallen trees were cleared. The total process ended on Friday noon, after which the electricity was restored", said Chief Electrical Engineer Stephen Fernandes.
In the earlier spell of rain that occurred four days ago, there was damage in North Goa. However, in the recent spell of rain, the whole of Goa witnessed havoc, and the gravity of the damage was more.
