Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC)’s remediation machinery has finally begun its work at the Sonsodo legacy dump in right earnest, finally churning out the Refused Derived Fuel (RDF), inert waste and soil (manure) at the dump.
The bigger question, however, remains unanswered -- when will the Margao Municipal Council finalise the sites for the dumping of the remediated waste as the GWMC is gearing to cart away the waste to the sites shortlisted by the civic body.
For the moment, the waste churned out by the remediation machinery is only a couple of tonnes, and the dump is presently playing host to the remediated waste. This question, however, will come into play sooner rather than later with the GWMC contractor getting set to go full steam ahead, by inducting the second machine at Sonsodo by the weekend.
When The Goan team visited Sonsodo on Thursday to find out the ground reality with the remediation machinery resuming operations after a two-day break following a technical snag, it came across the remediated waste around the machinery, comprising of RDF, soil/manure, inert and glass bottles stored around.
The remediated waste may not weigh much compared to the massive job at hand, but it did raise the question whether a place will be found to play host to the remediated waste with the MMC yet to finalise the sites and the shortlisted sites evoking strong protests from the local farmers and residents.
Right now, the Sonsodo dump yard plays host to the remediated waste as the lone machine is yet to go full steam ahead. Representatives of the contractor, looking after the machinery pointed out that the contractor will cart away the remediated waste at the sites shortlisted and finalised by the civic body.
This question assumes further significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact that the MMC is expected to file a detailed report on the sites shortlisted by the civic body for the temporary storage of the remediated waste when the writ petition filed by the Citizens for Sonsodo comes up before the High Court on Friday.
Contractor clears waste mound under high tension wire
MARGAO: After the unfortunate incident when a surveyor sustained burn injuries while conducting a survey at the Sonsodo legacy dump, triggering fire at the site, the contractor engaged by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has now cleared the mound of waste lying right underneath the 33KV high tension wire.
In coordination with the Power department, by taking a shut down, heavy earth moving machinery literally worked round the clock in the last four days to clear the waste mound right under the 33KV overhead wires to ensure that the unfortunate incident is not repeated during the remediation process.
In fact, two heavy earth moving machines were deployed at the site, under the 33KV lines to clear the waste mound in the last few days. With the contractor virtually cutting off the site under the power line from the main dump, the contractor now expects to take up the remediation work without having to worry about the overhead high tension line.
