Margao police finds itself in a quandary after having arrested the father of a 15-year-old girl on the charge of sexually assaulting his daughter, even as an NGO has moved the police station on Thursday stating that the girl has denied that she had ever made the allegations against her father and protested over his arrest.
With the father in custody of the Margao police and an NGO filing a report at the police station on Thursday stating that the girl had made up the story of the sexual assault, the Margao Police has now decided to refer the minor girl studying in Std X to the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Margao, for recording of her statement under Section 164 of the CrPC.
Though Margao police officials seem to be not convinced about the sexual assault theory, sources say the police are believed to have registered an FIR against the girl’s father following constant calls from a government department. “Right now, the father of the girl is behind bars. We have arrested him based on what the girl had reportedly told the school counsellor during the regular counselling session. We also know that the girl has now denied that any such incident had occurred with her. Taking no chances, we have decided to send the girl to the JMFC for recording of her statement,” informed a Margao police officer.
Sources informed that Women’s and Child Rights activist, Auda Viegas had made an application before the police on Wednesday with a plea to investigate the matter following the reportedly disclosure made by the girl to the school counsellor. However, before the police could investigate the matter thoroughly, an FIR was registered against the father followed by his arrest.
Incidentally, Auda filed another application before the Margao Police on Thursday reportedly stating that the girl had made up the story after interacting with the girl for quite long time when she protested over the arrest of her father. Auda pointed out that the girl was unhappy with the constant quarreling between her father and mother at home, saying the quarrelling had affected her studies and preparation for the ensuing SSC examinations.
The Margao police is investigating.
