In what is believed to be a counter-offensive in support of the Union government’s controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a group of citizens, including prominent BJP leaders, descended in front of the Margao Comunidade building on Thursday evening under the banner of Rashtra Premi Sanghatana, Margao, to express solidarity with the government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on
the issue.
Armed with placards in support of the CAA, the citizens shouted slogans ‘Vande Mataram’, ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’ and slogans in support of the CAA and later handed over a letter expressing their full support to the Citizens Amendment Act.
BJP leaders comprising of Damu Naik, district BJP president Sarvanand Bhagat, Sharmad Raiturkar, Margao Municipal Councilors, Rupesh Mahatme, Jaffar Budani, Ketan Kurtarkar, Margao block president Subodh Govekar, Gajanan Bhise and many other party functionaries took part in the demonstration in support of the CAA.
One of the participants explained to the citizens that the CAA is not at all unconstitutional, going to the extent of saying that the government had taken care of the minute details while drafting the Bill. He also said the Bill was passed taking into account the persecution of the minorities in neighbouring countries of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and termed as false propaganda that the CAA will affect the Muslims of India.
BJP leader and former two-time Fatorda MLA Damu Naik said the citizens have gathered to show their solidarity with the Citizenship Amendment Act passed by Parliament. While praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on the passage of the Bill, Damu said that citizens are ready to come down on the streets again to show their full support to the CAA.
In the letter addressed to the district Collector, South, the Rashtra Premi Sanghatana congratulated the central government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for taking the bold step of amending the Indian Citizens Act of 1955.
In fact, the forum has termed the Central government decision to amend the Indian Citizenship Act as “iconic”, saying the decision has brought about a sense of security in the entire nation.
