GWMC to intensify enforcement against open waste dumping

The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) is planning to intensify enforcement action against the rampant dumping of waste in open areas across the State, even as it continues awareness campaigns and infrastructure development to tackle the growing menace.

GWMC Managing Director Harish Adconkar said educating people about proper waste disposal is important, but strict enforcement will also be necessary to curb indiscriminate dumping of garbage, including chicken and wet waste.

“Educating people is one part of stopping open dumping, but we are also planning to conduct enforcement drives in a big way to tackle this menace,” Adconkar said.

He said the corporation has begun setting up manned waste collection centres to provide citizens and businesses with designated locations for disposal of waste.

“If we simply create transfer stations, they eventually turn into dumping sites. So we have started manned collection centres at three locations,” he said.

Adconkar added that such centres would help reduce illegal dumping and minimise the cost involved in retrieving waste from roadsides, culverts and water bodies.
