SANGUEM
Around 19 handloom workers who are working at the Handloom Centre at Wadem Sanguem for the last 20 years have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant requesting their regular employment in the government sector and also to fix minimum rates of skilled workers for their employment at the handloom centre.
In their memorandum, the workers complained of irregular supply of raw material to the Centre by the government leaving them without work for several days together.
"At times there is no sign of raw material for months together leaving us jobless for no fault of ours," claimed Shashikant Gaonkar.
The irregular supply of raw material also affects the functioning of the handloom centre, states the memorandum.
Former Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai who accompanied the workers in their delegation to the Chief Minister informed that the Chief Minister has directed the Director of the Handloom Corporation to look into the problems faced by the handloom workers at Wadem Sanguem and work out modalities for regular employment to the workers besides fixation of minimum wages as per the payment of Minimum Wages Act.
Phaldessai informed that most of the workers working at the Handloom Centre at Wadem are sole earners in the family and are already on the verge of attaining the retirement age.
