The directions from the court came after, petitioner Kashinath Shetye argued before the high court that the Goa Police were doing an unsatisfactory job in tackling matka and hence the matter should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The Crime Branch on their part have said that they investigations are in progress and that they have even travelled to Maharashtra to verify and trace the sources and kingpins behind the racket as alleged by Shetye.
Speaking to The Goan, Shetye said that the police had approached the court saying that he should make the Maharashtra Police a party to the case.
“Why should I make the Maharashtra police a party to this case? When there is a murder, the Goa Police have enough jurisdiction to go to Maharashtra and arrest the culprits. Why can’t they do the same for matka,” Shetye asked.
The court then asked the case be adjourned by two weeks until the report of the police is made available.
Shetye has also filed another petition demanding that the casinos in Goa have no permission from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority and hence should be move ‘offshore’ or 12 nautical miles off the coast of Goa where they can operate.
The case was admitted and the government has been asked to file its reply, Shetye said.
