The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directedthe State government and Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL)to upgrade all existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras alongDayanand Bandodkar Road within five months to enable automatic detection ofunauthorised parking.
The cameras currently detect seat-beltviolations and red-light jumping but the upgraded system must also identifyvehicles parked illegally. The Bench has further directed the Panaji TrafficCell to take prompt penal action against violators.
The direction follows the court’s earlierorders to enforce a no-parking zone along the casino belt, from the petrol pumpnear Panaji Residency to Panaji Church. The Division Bench of Justice ValmikiMenezes and Justice Amit Jamsandekar had allowed casino vehicles to pick up anddrop off passengers at designated points, including near the Old AccountsDepartment, but prohibited parking at these locations and along the stretch.
The court had also accepted the proposal toinstall signs warning motorists about AI-enabled cameras, after existing NoParking and No Stopping signs failed to deter violations.
