The High Court of Bombay at Goa has given the Goa government, Central Bureau of Investigation, Goa Police and other respondents two weeks to file their replies to a petition alleging illegal custody and police torture of Moin Shaikh, who later died by suicide.
The Division Bench of Justice Valmiki Menezes and Justice Amit Jamsandekar directed that advance copies of the affidavits in reply be furnished to the petitioner and posted the matter for hearing on October 21.
Moin’s brother, Sofiyan, has sought transfer of the investigation to the CBI, alleging that the former was illegally taken into custody by Valpoi PSI Prathmesh Gawas and another police personnel during the intervening night of April 25-26.
The petition alleged that Moin was subjected to severe physical torture by PSI Gawas and other personnel at the Valpoi Police Station. It further claimed that the physical and psychological trauma he suffered led him to take his own life on April 28.
During the previous hearing, the High Court had directed the inspector in charge of Valpoi Police Station to preserve all CCTV footage recorded between April 18 and 26, 2026, in view of the allegations made in the petition.
