As a photo of Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas taking a pledge last year to save river Sal went viral on Thursday after Margao Municipal waste found its way in Benaulim, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas spoke to his Margao counterpart Kamat, besides Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar, Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar and PWD, NH Executive engineer Dattaprasad Kamat.
Saying that the authorities are involved in a blame game, Venzy said the Margao Municipal Council has no other option than to lift away the waste back to the city. “When I spoke to the MMC Chairperson, he told me that the civic body had spoken to the PWD, NH before dumping the waste in Benaulim. The PWD, EE has denied that any permission has been given to the civic body to dump the waste along the western bypass stretch”, the MLA said.
Giving a clean chit to the Margao MLA, Venzy said Kamat had told the MMC not to take the waste to Benaulim.
“We have now asked for a meeting with the MMC Chairperson at the Benaulim Panchayat on Monday. Till the time the meeting takes place, the MMC will not dump any more waste at the site. The MMC Chairperson told me that the civic body will cap the waste, but I have insisted for the lifting away of the waste. There is no short cut in waste management”, Venzy said, adding that the police complaint will be lodged with the Colva police against the Margao Municipal Council for the illegal act.
