Civic body decides to ban sale of tender coconuts in Margao

MARGAO

With coconut waste generated in the commercial capital reaching unimaginable proportions, the Margao Municipal  Council has decided to ban sale of tender coconut in the city with immediate effect.

In fact, Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar and Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar issued directions to the Municipal market inspectors to go around the city on Thursday itself and convey a message loud and clear to the illegal tender coconut vendors to stop the sale or face confiscation of the coconuts.

By evening, all the market inspectors were on the field to convey the message to the mushrooming tender coconut vendors to stop the sale of tender coconuts from Friday or face action.

Chairperson Damu Shirodkar told The Goan that the MMC is grappling with the coconut waste including shells and husk generated by the coconut vendors. “The MMC want to streamline the sale of tender coconut vending in the city. The vendors are mushrooming in the city as a result of which the coconut waste has also grown manifold. The vendors do not pay any fees to the civic body for the treatment of the coconut waste”, Shirodkar said.

Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar informed that till such time the civic body is in receipt of the coconut waste shredder, the MMC will crack a whip against illegal vendors. “These illegal vendors neither pay any fees to the Civic body nor treat the waste. The ban on illegal coconut vending will come into force with immediate effect”, he added.
