PORVORIM

Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte visited Gulyakade circle near O’Coqueiro and inspected the historic gulo installed at the circle by the Public Works Department (PWD).

PWD (NH) engineer Adesh Chodankar, Serula Comunidade chairman Ashley Lobo, Penha de Franca sarpanch Swapnil Chodankar and Traffic Inspector Tulsidas Naik were present. Khaunte suggested improvements, including lighting arrangements, to the PWD contractor.

Speaking to the press, Khaunte said the circle is locally known as Gulyakade because of the historic ‘gulo’, a milestone or boundary marker, installed there during the Portuguese era. A foundation stone and road marker dating to 1910 was placed at the junction to mark the construction of the road connecting Panaji and Mapusa.

Khaunte said the gulo is part of Goa’s heritage and should be preserved for future generations. It was originally located on Serula Comunidade property beside the road, but was shifted to Art Park during construction of the Porvorim flyover.

With the flyover completed and opened to the public, the gulo has now been shifted back to the circle. Khaunte said historians had recommended its return so younger generations could understand its historical importance. He said the structure would be inaugurated after Ganesh Chaturthi.
