The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Tuesday discussed various important issues in the port town, but the most discussed issue pertained to the filing of an FIR against a lower division clerk (LDC) over allegations of fraud, cheating and forgery.
MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said a resolution had been taken to give the case to the vigilance department for an enquiry, followed by lodging an FIR against the LDC.
Some Councillors, however, maintained that a proper enquiry needed to be followed before the council files an FIR.
Later speaking to reporters, MMC councillor Fredrick Henriques said a wrong narrative was being conveyed that the entire MMC including its councillors are corrupt.
“There are allegations against an LDC but it will remain allegations until proved. We are of the firm opinion that action has to be taken if the LDC is guilty but it looks to us that there may be some personal agenda here,” said Henriques.
“If he is guilty, conduct an enquiry, follow the procedure but in the meeting they are asking the council to file an FIR against the LDC. There may be some staff who may be guilty, but if that is the case, prove it first and then take necessary action. We are not blocking any action because it’s an allegation, which needs to be proved,” Henriques added.
