VASCO
Several residents of Hollant on Monday evening demanded a change of jurisdiction from the Verna police station to the geographically closer Vasco police station to curb anti-social activities in the area.
Led by former Velsao-Pale-Issorcim sarpanch Lawrence Pereira, the aggrieved locals submitted a memorandum to Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo demanding police patrolling at Hollant beach in view of illegal activities and also to contain the drinking and smoking menace in the area in the late hours of the night.
Residents also complained that the anti-social elements are causing nuisance in the area and at times clash with the locals.
They claimed that with police clamping down on drugs and anti-social activities in the jurisdiction of Vasco police station, the miscreants had shifted base to Hollant, which falls in Verna police station.
Locals demanded that Hollant be placed under Vasco police jurisdiction, instead of Verna police station, as the Vasco police station is geographically closer to Hollant.
They also requested local MLA Alina Saldanha to intervene and take serious note of illegal activities. “PI Raposo has curbed many anti-social activities in Vasco and the miscreants have now landed at Hollant. Verna police is not taking action despite several requests. It takes a lot of time for the Verna police team to reach the site,” said Pereira.
“A lady was attacked with a bottle, while another lady was pulled by her hair,” he rued.
“The areas of Ranghavi and Issorcim have been placed under Vasco police jurisdiction, but the small neighbourhood of Hollant is in Verna police jurisdiction.”
“Our request is to put Hollant in Vasco police jurisdiction or to have a dedicated police outpost in the area,” Pereira added.
