Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha on Monday suggested that tetrapods could be placed along the coast at Velsao as preventive measures to curb sand erosion.
Saldanha was speaking to reporters after conducting a site inspection along with officials of Water Resources Department (WRD) and local fishermen at Dando beach in Velsao. The inspection was carried out after several fishermen complained of heavy sand erosion along Velsao beach and had feared that seawater was on the verge of entering villages.
“During the inspection, it was noticed that there was erosion all over Velsao beach and sand from under the canoes stationed at the beach had vanished.”
“This is an alarming situation and WRD officials have planned that two different locations of 220 mtrs and 150 mtrs at Velsao beach would be included for protection by placing tetrapods as preventive measures to prevent further erosion,” said Saldanha.
“The tetrapods will be placed with gaps to provide access to local fishermen on the beach. These tetrapods will be placed in a way that the gaps between them will form like a natural ramp for entry and exit of canoes,” the
MLA added.
Saldanha further said WRD engineers were instructed to seek guidelines from the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) Pune.
“Photos were clicked by WRD officials to be presented to the CWRPS agency, to show the present situation at Velsao beach and to take the right preventive measures,” said Saldanha.
