Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane’s announcement that the government will regularise the services of civic employees who have worked for more than seven years has raised hope among many daily wage employees of the Margao Municipal Council.
These daily wage employees, believed to be over 100, have worked for a considerable period with the hope of having their services regularised by the government.
On Friday, many daily wage workers sought clarity from the leader of the Goa Municipal Employees Association, Anil Shirodkar, regarding the prospects of their services being regularised by the government. Shirodkar, however, said the Union will seek clarity from the government on the matter.
He later told The Goan after the meeting that the Minister’s announcement has raised hopes among the daily wage employees that they may finally be regularised in the civic body. “I have assured the workers that the Union will seek clarity on the Minister’s statement with the Urban Development Ministry,” he added.
When asked, Shirodkar pointed out that there may be close to 200 daily wage workers employed by the Margao civic body, adding that many of these workers will be eligible for regularisation according to the Minister’s announcement.
Meanwhile, questions are being raised in the corridors of the Margao Municipal Council about whether or not the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) meeting has taken place in the civic body. Some employees have sought clarity on the number of workers proposed to be considered for promotion and whether they include the regular employees or the daily wage workers.
