With coconut prices crossing Rs 70 per piece ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, the Goa Horticulture Development Corporation (GHDC) will sell coconuts at subsidised rates to provide relief to consumers.
GHDC Chairman Premendra Shet said on Tuesday that the corporation would begin selling coconuts on a no-profit, no-loss basis in about eight days. The move aims to ensure adequate supplies and keep prices affordable during the festive season.
Coconuts are widely used in religious rituals and in the preparation of traditional sweets and other dishes during Ganesh Chaturthi. The sharp rise in prices has increased the burden on households preparing for the festival.
Shet said the corporation had undertaken a similar initiative last year, which received a positive response from consumers.
The coconuts will be made available through GHDC outlets, helping consumers avoid high market prices during the period of peak demand.
