Ever since incumbent medico-legal surgeon Dr Avinash Poojary has proceeded on terminal leave after issuing notice of voluntary retirement, Hospicio is literally grappling with the question of post-mortem examinations in the hospital. No doubt, Hospicio has a medical officer, who also performs autopsies, but questions are being raised in the corridors of the hospital and outside as to why the government has not deputed a forensic doctor in place of Dr Poojary, who is on leave for most of the time after serving the notice of voluntary retirement.
Inquiries by the The Goan have revealed that Hospicio Medical Superintendent Dr Aira Almeida had immediately notified the Directorate of Health Services over Dr Poojary’s notice of voluntary retirement, but a solution is not forthcoming till date.
To tide over the problem, the Hospicio medical superintendent had recently issued a circular to the police stating that post-mortems will be carried out in the hospital on
Saturdays only till noon, a step which did not find favour with the men-in-khaki, who got back to the hospital saying the autopsies should be carried out at least till the evening session.
