Hot-mix works end stench at Margao fish market

Hot mixing works at the Margao wholesale fish market.

The familiar stink and stench that once pervaded the sprawling wholesale fish market in Margao have now disappeared, thanks to the hot-mixing of the entire open market area.

The open space, which serves as a parking zone for fish trucks, has been resurfaced with a fresh coat of hot mix. Men and machinery worked round the clock over the last three days to complete the project ahead of the monsoon season.

To facilitate the work, the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) temporarily shifted wholesale fish market operations to the redeveloped section of the market complex.

Traditional fisherman from Benaulim, Pele Fernandes, has complimented PWD Minister Digambar Kamat and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai for ensuring the timely execution of the project.

“When I found the market complex reeking of stench, with muck all around, I approached Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai for relief since the market falls within his constituency. Sardesai immediately contacted PWD Minister Digambar Kamat, who sought just 15 days to undertake and complete the work,” Fernandes said.

Expressing gratitude to both Kamat and Sardesai for transforming the wholesale fish market, Fernandes said the facelift would go a long way in alleviating the hardships faced by fishermen and traders operating in the market.

The Benaulim-based fisherman also made a fervent appeal to the PWD Minister, the Fatorda MLA and the SGPDA to improve toilet facilities within the market complex for the benefit of traditional fishermen and other stakeholders.

With the open space hot mixed, the focus is now back on the SGPDA again over the commissioning of the redeveloped wholesale fish market.
