Days after threats by the Congress and Goa Forward Party, authorities on Tuesday began hotmixing the dilapidated stretch of the NH66 at Canacona.
The hotmixing work began near Bhumipurush Temple at Gulem-Canacona in the presence of the leaders and activists of both parties.
Incidentally, several Congress and GFP activists had assembled for a rasta-roko following their threat to agitate if authorities did not start hotmixing work by March 1.
A delegation from both parties had submitted memorandums to this effect to PWD officials in Margao and Panaji, threatening to block the NH66 at 10 locations between Polem and Dramapur, if repair work did not begin by Tuesday.
According to sources, over 100 youth activists had assembled on the highway, when they were informed that the PWD contractor is already making preparations to begin repair and hotmixing works from Gulem-Canacona.
Later speaking to media, Canacona GPCC General Secretary Janardhan Bhandari said the State government was forced to undertake repairs and hotmixing of dilapidated NH66 road after threats of an agitation.
“It is unfortunate that previous MLAs and even a former minister could not start the repair work, for which work orders were issued in October 2021.”
“We have received several complaints regarding deficiency in services including water supply, road repairs and electricity. The very day after elections, we took up the water supply issue and it has been partially solved but still people are being harassed at many places in Canacona,” said Bhandari.
“We will not rest till we address all such issues and resolve them to the satisfaction of the people,” he added.
