CANACONA
A house belonging to elderly woman Laxmi Komarpant was completely gutted in a fire at Tembevada, Canacona, on Thursday night.
The incident occurred around 10.30 pm while Komarpant was asleep. On noticing the fire, she raised an alarm, following which local residents rushed to the spot and attempted to douse the flames with water. However, as the fire intensified, residents alerted the Canacona fire station. Fire personnel later brought the blaze under control.
Household belongings, including a cupboard, refrigerator and various electrical appliances, were destroyed in the fire. While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, a short circuit is suspected to have triggered it.
On Friday morning, Tribal Welfare Minister and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar visited the site to assess the damage. He assured Komarpant that a new house would be constructed for her under the ‘Shramdham’ scheme.
Those accompanying the minister included Canacona BJP Mahila Morcha president Neetu Desai, Police Inspector Therron D’Costa and others.
