They targeted only locked houses and operated mainly at nights. But more importantly, they managed to stay away from the long arm of the law for at least four years.
The two accused, involved in a series of house-breaks in Bardez were running a successful business until Mapusa Police brought an end to their criminal enterprise. “They have been arrested for the first time. One of the reasons for them not coming under the police lens could be because there were only two people involved in the operation,” said Mapusa Police Inspector Tushar Lotlikar.
Police investigations have revealed that even a house that was locked for just one night was found to be targeted by the accused. Secondly, the duo sold the stolen goods mostly to people from their community.
One of the accused, Pundalik Lamani, had made Anjuna village his home while Asif Bepari was residing at Maddel in Tivim.
Soon after their arrest, police recovered 10 LCD/LED TVs, two two-wheelers and a mobile set from their possession but expect to make more recoveries in days to come.
A team of Mapusa Police along with one of the accused has gone to Gadak, Karnataka, their hometown, where the duo have apparently sold a lot of TV sets, a police source informed.
In the meanwhile, a Mapusa court has extended the remand of the two accused for another five days.
