At a time when Goa is grappling with demands for growing power needs as well as objections over growing power tariff hikes, finding alternate sources of generating power has become a major challenge for the State government.
The State government has been compelled to spend about Rs 1,200 crore to Rs 1,300 crore to purchase electricity from other parts of the country, after being unable to produce electricity through hydroelectric or thermal projects.
“There was indeed a study done to establish hydro electricity project, but it was not found feasible in the State. At present, it is difficult for the government to have its own electricity project,” according to Chief Engineer of Electricity Department Nilkhant Reddy.
“For a thermal-based power project, huge amounts of coal would be needed and it is costly to import coal. Hence, this thermal-based power project is also not feasible for the State government,” Reddy added.
