The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) on Thursday took suo motu cognisance of complaints from Bethora residents over foul odour and alleged pollution caused by industrial units. The Commission issued notices to six government authorities, directing them to submit reports by July 29.
The action followed a news report published in a local daily highlighting the problems faced by residents due to foul odour and pollution allegedly caused by nearby industrial units.
The notices were issued to the Chief Secretary, Director of Health Services, Director of Industries, Trade and Commerce, Member Secretary of the Goa State Pollution Control Board, Secretary of the Bethora-Nirancal-Conxem-Codari Village Panchayat, and the Health Officer of the Sub-District Hospital, Ponda.
The Commission, comprising Chairperson Justice Bharat Deshpande and Members Desmond D’Costa and Pramod Kamat, directed all respondents to submit their reports and appear before it either personally or through authorised representatives on July 29 at 10.30 am.
