A number of groups of traditional folk dancers like ‘ghode modni’ and ‘fugdi’ and artistes of ‘romtamel’ troupes dressed in colourful attire danced their way through the streets, even as the young and old occupied every space along the parade route to take a glimpse of the parade.
Such was the craze among the onlookers that many rushed in bid to take a selfie with the best troupe in the parade. Huge floats depicting the mythological scenes were the toast of the evening, even as the lighting effect provided an additional thrust to the spectacle.
According to a Mohan Kanekar, President of the Mapusa Shigmotsav organizing committee, 26 groups participated in the floats category, 9 in romtamel and 22 in fancy dress. Mapusa Police and the traffic personnel had put a near perfect plan in place to control traffic and the surging crowd of onlookers, as almost all the streets were packed with revelers. In Mapusa, the Shigmo parade is held on the penultimate day while on the last day, this year on March 27, it’s held in Pernem.
