Heading the list of outstanding arrears is CCP with nearly Rs 16 crore, followed by Mormugao Municipal Council with over Rs 15 crore and Margao Municipal Council over Rs 9.6 crore.
The outstanding tax arrears comprise those receivable through house tax, professional/trade tax, advertising/signboards/hoarding tax, rent, IDC tax and sopo/market fees.
The municipality with least outstanding tax arrears is Pernem Municipal Council at Rs 17 lakh.
Nonetheless, as far as the outstanding arrears of house tax and proff/trade tax are concerned, Margao Municipal Council is the highest with over Rs 6.5 crore and Over Rs 2 crore respectively. However, Mormugao Municipal Council has the highest amount of outstanding arrears through rent amounting to over Rs 8 crore. When contacted over the pending tax arrears, Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Prabhudessai said, “In fact, lots of taxes are coming in in this very month. However, we are also contemplating on carrying out a survey of commercial establishments which do not have trade licences, for which we are exploring the possibility of using innovative technology to do the mapping of establishments in the wards. Compiling this data will make it easier for us to go about recovering taxes.”
CCP too, which is heading the list of outstanding tax arrears, has initiated various steps to recover the outstanding arrears.
“The outstanding tax arrears also include house tax from various state and central government establishments. It has not been assessed till date. There are some legal and technical glitches which we have to overcome to recover these,” said CCP Commissioner Dipak Desai.”
