After relocating the site twice in the past, the Goa government it seems has finally zeroed in on a chunk of 10 lakh square meters of land at Melaulim, Guleli in Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s home taluka of Sattari.

A resolution approved by Sawant’s cabinet on Friday approved transfer of the land to the IIT, which currently temporarily functions from the sprawling campus area of the Goa Engineering College on the Farmagudi plateau.

What tilted the scales in favour of the site at Sattari was the fact that the land already belongs to the Goa government’s Revenue Department and it would entail no further expenditure which would be unfeasible for the State government.

“We are in a position to now hand over the land to them (IIT) tomorrow,” Sawant told the media after the cabinet meeting held at the State Secretariat’s ministerial block.

Although the premier technology institute which has global recognition was seeking an additional 2-lakh square meters for possible future expansion, Sawant said 10 lakh square metres is the requirement and the Sattari land will soon be transferred
