PANAJI:
The Goa branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday joined fellow doctors across the nation in protesting the rape and murder of a post-graduate student doctor at a Kolkata hospital.
Doctors wore black armbands throughout the day as a show of protest and in solidarity with the fraternity which is demanding a stricter law on attacks against hospitals and use of physical violence against doctors.
Dr Sandesh Chodankar of IMA said physical violence in hospitals against doctors is a criminal offence punishable with three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000.
"However, the law is hardly implemented. A stricter law in this matter is pending in Parliament," Dr Chodankar said, adding that now is the right time to create awareness of this law.
