While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday predicted light rain/thundershowers at isolated places in the State on May 22 and 23, it remained non-committal on the onset of monsoon in Goa.
Predicting the progress of the monsoon in the country, the weather department said that the Southwest monsoon had advanced into some parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands and South Andaman Sea on Friday.
“With a gradual increase in moisture incursion and likely formation of a trough, both the districts in the State are very likely to experience cloudiness and light rain/thundershowers at isolated places on May 22 and 23,” said scientist Rajeshree at IMD Goa.
The State continued to witness hot and humid conditions on Friday and according to the weather office, it is expected to continue in the days to come.
The IMD has recorded 36 degree Centigrade as the highest maximum temperature in Panaji and 25.5 degree Centrigrade as the lowest minimum temperature.
According to IMD scientist Rajeshree, no information was available on the onset of Southwest monsoon in Goa even as the IMD had said that onset of monsoon over Kerala was likely to be delayed by around four days, predicting its arrival on June 4. Normally, the Southwest monsoon hits Kerala on June 1.
The normal date of onset of monsoon in Goa is June 5 which is four days after it arrives in Kerala.
But since the onset of the monsoon in Kerala is likely to be delayed by four days, it is also expected to be delayed in the State.
“We cannot say anything about the onset of monsoon in Goa as there are no such reports available from IMD Delhi,” Scientist Rajeshree said.
Meanwhile, the IMD has said that conditions were favourable for further advance of the Southwest monsoon into some more parts of the South Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands during the next three to four days.
“In association with the persistence of southwesterly winds in the lower tropospheric levels and rainfall activity over the area during the past 24 hours, Southwest monsoon has advanced into some parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands and South Andaman Sea on May 19,” the IMD press-note said.
