Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Sunday said that the implementation of the new stringent Motors Vehicle Act in Goa has been postponed amidst the Covid 19 pandemic.
Godinho was speaking to reporters alongside a function organised to distribute limbs and other disability equipment and aids for physically challenged person at the Dabolim BJP constituency office in New Vaddem on Sunday evening as a part of the Sewa Saptah week to commemorate the 70th birthday of PM Narendra Modi.
Godinho informed reporters that the new stringent MV Act was to be implemented in Goa from October 1.
"Goa government has decided to postpone the implementation of the Act which stipulates heavy fines coupled with punishments for traffic violations. The Act was to be implemented from October 1 and only the notification of the Act was pending. I later had a discussion with the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and kept the decision pending”, he said.
Godinho said increasing fines by implementing the new Act may not be correct. “We already have a pandemic and people are already facing a lot of hardships... we have decided to postpone the implementation of the Act", he said.
He however, stated that the question on when the Act will be implemented will be discussed with the chief minister and a decision will be taken.
“I have recommended that the new Act be implemented from January 1, 2021 but the final decision will be taken by the chief minister", Godinho said.
