State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) on Monday created history by harvesting organs from a patient who was declared brain dead and successfully transplanted the organs to two recipients.
Health Minister on Tuesday took to Twitter to announce that Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim has thereby created history.
"History was made at SOTTO Goa, @GoaGmc, as our doctors for the first time harvested organs from a deceased donor last night. This is the first-ever attempt made by GMC for organ donation and transplantation," he wrote.
He further informed that the donated kidneys shall be transplanted to two recipients as per the sequential order in the SOTTO registry.
"Truly a proud moment for the people of the State of Goa," the Health Minister stated.
It was later learnt that donor was a 21 year-old road accident victim, whose heart, liver, lungs and two kidneys were harvested by three separate teams after he was declared brain dead following the fatal accident on Thursday. The organs were immediately transported outside the State; the heart to a patient at Mumbai and the liver to a patient in Nagpur.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also lauded GMC’s doctors. “We made history as our doctors at SOTTO successfully harvested organs from a deceased in their first ever attempt. I congratulate the doctors and the staff of GMC. Goa is proud of your achievement,” he tweeted.
