The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Friday evening sealed 8 food establishments in Karaswada-Mapusa and Tivim after they were found not compliant with hygiene and safety rules.

An FDA team conducted a special surveillance campaign and inspected 18 such establishments in the two places. The team inspected popular bakeries, juice centres, fast food outlets and tea houses.

During the inspection, the team observed a lack of cleanliness in eight establishments.

Incidentally, the FDA had earlier inspected these establishments and had advised them to make improvements.

However, the FDA team found that hygiene and safety regulations were not followed, and a fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on each of these establishments. Directives were also given to seal these establishments for preparing food in unsanitary kitchens.

The special surveillance campaign was carried out by a team led by North Goa FDA Officer Richard Noronha, Rajaram Patil, Shailesh Shenvi, Amit Mandrekar, Nausin Mulla and Lenin Disa under the guidance of FDA Director Sweta Desai.

The FDA is implementing the campaign as part of its commitment to public health and food safety, and officials informed that similar inspection campaigns will be launched in other talukas in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the FDA has maintained strict vigil on the closed outlets in Alankar Theatre area of Mapusa.

The FDA has also convened a meeting on food safety and hygiene for the fast food vendors in the premises of Alankar Theatre and GMC Complex in Bambolim.
