In Mapusa, precious water flows down the drain; citizens deprived

Large amount of water is going down the drain due to leakages, even as local residents have to go without water for days together.
The leakages, however, have come as a big relief to migrants and their children, who use the water to bathe and wash their clothes and utensils.
Complaints to the local PWD office at Mapusa have borne no fruit, as they push the blame on the Porvorim office since the problem was with the main line that supplies water to Porvorim.
“Unable to see so much water being wasted day in and day out, I complained to
the Mapsua PWD office. But unfortunately, the local officials have failed to plug the leak,” said Suryakant Sardessai, a concerned citizen from the area.
The leakage is at the main PWD pipeline which passes on the right side of the road while travelling towards Panaji just after the Carvalho Petrol Pump.
Sources in the PWD disclosed that several complaints were made to its Porvorim office and the pipeline was also repaired on several occasions in the past.
The PWD officials blamed the migrants for the nuisance, who keep on messing with the valve to make use of the water for personal use.
“The migrants interfere with the settings of the valve and make use of the water for their personal use. In the past, we have plugged the leakage on many occasions but the migrants fiddle with it again and again,” said Prajyot Naik, JE at Mapusa PWD.
He said the only alternative now was to complain to the local police against the migrants and the contractor.

Over the years, some hotels had started inviting locals to have a party by even offering their swimming pools to jump in.  It was believed that this would help hotels in making some money in June, which is off-season month.   Simon Fernandes, general manager, Marquis…
