In his press statement Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he saw opportunity for further cooperation between India and Brazil, both growing economies and with common goals.
“We have agreed to scale up our engagement. This is in line with our mutual desire for a reinforced strategic partnership. Brazil is among our most important economic partners in Latin America,” Modi said.
Modi spoke of the cultural connection between Goa and Brazil and its importance in light of the fact that the Brazil head of state’s first visit as premier out of Latin America is to India and more specifically to Goa.
“I am delighted that Goa with its common cultural Portuguese heritage is part of his maiden visit to India. Though separated by geography, Brazil and India are natural partners linked by common values of democracy, rule of law and shared aspirations for development, peace and prosperity,” Modi said.
Brazil was the first country Modi visited after assuming office and Temer has returned the compliment.
For his part, Brazil President Michel Temer spoke of his administration’s resolve to revive the Brazilian economy which he said had stalled in recent times.
