The Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) and the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) inked a deal by which the two Canadian and Indian government-sponsored polar research organisations will utilize each other’s infrastructure in the two icy polar regions.
CHARS and NCPOR signed the Memorandum of Co-operation (MOC) on Wednesday in Delhi to advance collaboration in research and innovation in polar science. While CHARS has a research station in the Arctic, India’s NCPOR operates a station in the Antartica region. The MOC seeks to establish a partnership framework between the two organisations to better co-operate by facilitating access to research infrastructure and also sharing resources and data.
Dr David J Scott, President and Chief Executive Officer of Polar Knowledge Canada, the parent Canadian government body which administers CHARS and Dr Ravichandran M, Director of NCPOR signed the MOC in the presence of diplomats and top government functionaries.
The MOC also dwells on co-ordinating and integrating research activities for more efficient operations in the polar regions. The agreement looks to identify mutual areas of interest and to integrate research projects wherever possible besides developing mechanisms to facilitate reciprocal access to polar research infrastructure and logistical services.
Other aspects of the MOC include facilitating exchange of personnel, data and other resources.
“This Memorandum of Co-operation between the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) and the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research of India lays the groundwork for exciting, mutually beneficial research collaborations that will strengthen our ability to understand and respond to climate change as it affects the Arctic, the Antarctic, and the entire globe,” said Dr Scott.
The deal also includes a commitment to consider Indian participation in Canadian Arctic research.
Canadian High Commissioner to India Patel remarked, “The scope for research coordination under the Memorandum of Co-operation is truly multifaceted, including positive contributions on climate change, sustainable development, clean energy, and more.”
