Indian classical music and Gregorian music have similarities: Fr Peter

PANJIM: Fr Peter Cardoso, director of the music academy, Pilar Seminary said that Indian classical music and Gregorian music had many similarities, as they were both based on religious texts. Fr Cardoso was speaking at the concluding session of the second day of the three-day music symposium organised jointly by the Ketevan Music Festival and the Goa University. He sang Indian raagas followed by Gregorian chants.

Earlier Italian musician-scholar, Paolo Pacciolla shared his research on ancient Indian percussion instrument, the Mridanga, which is a forerunner of the modern-day Pakhawaj.

Spanish musician-academic, Daniel Martinez, who plays the Arabic instrument, Oud, in his lecture on Jewish music, played several Jewish compositions from across the world.

The last day of the three-day music symposium will take place between 4.30 to 6.30 pm on February 18, at the Central Library, Patto, Panjim.
