The Commission’s directions were issued during the hearing of a complaint filed by Adv Aires Rodrigues that policemen in the State were being made to work for long hours amid pathetic and very appalling working conditions.
Adv Rodrigues countered the stand taken by the Director General of Police that all amenities including canteen and recreational facilities were available at every police station and submitted that the DGP’s reply does not depict the real and factual position regarding the working and living conditions of the police personnel.
The complainant sought that at least two police stations, one in each district, be inspected to verify the ground realities.
The complaint has alleged that most policemen get a break only after several days of work, which takes a toll on their personal lives and health. It has been sought that like all other government employees, the police should work eight hours.
