The government has a policy to give preference to locals in 80% of jobs in the private sector and so, how did these companies participate in a recruitment drive in a neighbouring state?----------------------------

PANAJI: Taking serious cognizance of firms participating in a recent recruitment drive in Sawantwadi-Maharashtra to fill posts for their factories in Goa, Labour Minister Rohan Khaunte has ordered an inquiry in the matter.
The State government has stipulated that local Goans should have preference to 80% of the jobs in the private sector.
At a time when thousands of youth in Goa are hopeful of government and private jobs, moves by firms to participate in a recent recruitment drive in Sawantwadi-Maharashtra to fill posts for their factories in Goa has not gone down well with Khaunte.
“The government has a policy to give preference to locals in 80% of jobs in the private sector and so, how did these companies participate in a recruitment drive in a neighbouring state? They should respond to this,” said Minister Khaunte.
Taking serious cognizance of a report in The Goan, Khaunte said: “I have directed the labour commissioner to provide information on whether these companies concerned had any correspondence with our employment exchange or if they had sought an NOC from our employment exchange to participate in a recruitment drive in a neighbouring state,” said Khaunte.
According to sources, the State government restrictions cannot be imposed on private companies, but the government has stipulated that locals should get priority in the private sector across the State.
When eligible candidates are not available in the State, companies may seek manpower from neighbouring States.
“The list of eligible candidates will be prepared after getting exact information about unemployed people in the State by updating the Employment Exchange. Candidates will be made compulsory to register their Aadhaar card, so it will be easier to prepare the list of unemployed persons,” informed Khaunte, adding that the labour department has decided to provide online enrolment of employment.
“In the private sector, various entrepreneurs can fill vacancies by contacting the Employment Exchange Centre and asking them to list eligible candidates and sending them a letter to provide information about vacancies.”
“The government is also considering restrictions on private companies, whereby they should first seek an NoC from the labour department before participating in recruitment drives in neighbouring states to fill vacant posts in their industries in the State.”
“It is inappropriate to put a legal restriction on private companies, but efforts should be to give priority to locals in employment in the State,” Khaunte added.
It may be recalled that 25 companies with factories in the State had participated in a recruitment drive at Sawantwadi to fill 650 vacant posts with collaboration with the Maharashtra government.
The companies are in search of employees who are graduates, 12th pass or IIT for the various posts in their Goan factories, leaving many to wonder why these companies were looking out to employ people from other states, when thousands of unemployed youths in Goa are capable to fill these vacant posts.

Hold recruitment drives
in mine-affected areas,
Khaunte to private firms
PANAJI: Admitting that many people have been left unemployed due to the mining ban, Labour Minister Rohan Khaunte has appealed to businessmen to hold recruitment drives in mine-affected areas, to fill up vacant posts in the private sector across the State. “I am also seriously considering on possibilities to organise such a recruitment driver through the employment exchange,” said Khaunte.
