MARGAO
There’s finally a ray of hope for the Margao Municipal Council garden with the civic body deciding to restore it to its past glory. Besides the garden, it has also resolved to spruce up the municipal building, which has been craving for attention, by giving it a fresh coat of paint.
At the Council meeting held on Monday, Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai proposed a facelift to the municipal garden. The proposal received support from the city fathers, who called for action against illegal activities taking place inside the garden.
Giving a green signal to the Chairperson to go ahead with these projects, the city fathers pointed out the citizens will question them what they have done for the city in the current term and not how much revenue has been added to the coffers. The Chairperson said benches all around the garden will be taken up for repairs. The structure located in the Aga Khan garden will also get a face lift, the Chairperson informed the members, adding that the beautification project will be taken up
under the 14th Finance Commission funds.
City fathers also drew attention of the Chairperson to the advertising boards put up on the garden fence, demanding their removal if the contractor has not paid any fees to the civic body. The Chairperson, however, said the Council will seek legal advice on this count before taking action.
On the renovation of the century-old heritage building, the Chairpersons said the civic body will take up the work departmentally given that the Council has not received the nod from GSUDA till date. “The Council had made a provision of Rs 50 lakh in the budget for the renovation and painting of the building. If required, the civic body will spend additional money on the project,” she said.
Councillors pointed out that the municipal building is indeed craving for attention and there are space constraints even to store the official files.
The Chairperson has also promised to deploy security in the garden to keep anti-socials at bay. It has also resolved to restore the beautified steps adjoining Hospicio leading to the Monte Chapel, which has been craving for attention.
