CANACONA
The three days of merry making in age-old style is still prevalent in many parts of the state, including Canacona.
Armed with dhol, tashe and kansali, several ward-wise groups went house-to-house singing and playing rich ethnic songs and dancing to their tunes. Loliem, Poinguinim, Bhatpal, Pansulem and Agonda are some of the places that saw mell groups in performance. At Agonda, at least four different groups went house to house and visited mands in the village.
Ubo-Dando, Parvem, Mirandwado and Betul are the four prominent groups from the seven wards/groups at Agonda that have kept this old tradition alive. Most of these groups say the litany at the miraculous Holy Cross at Val-Agonda on the last day of Intruz. Interestingly, this year some of the groups have also organised street plays in their wards.
Meanwhile, village elders have urged the youth to keep this tradition alive to foster more harmony and togetherness among the residents.
