Irate crowd thrashes man on suspicion of kidnapping boy

Police say man mentally unstable

An irate crowd on Tuesday evening thrashed a man after accused him of attempting to kidnap a minor boy in Vasco.

According to information, the incident occurred at around 6.30 pm near the old fish market after a man is believed to have pulled a minor boy.

The boy raised an alarm and a crowd beat the man mercilessly before handing him over to the Vasco police. A video of the incident then went viral on social media.

Vasco PI Kapil Nayak, however, issued a press release stating that the person may have been mentally unstable.

"A person, Nagendra of Vasco, appeared at this police station and informed that one suspected person was found kidnapping minor boy at Kharewado-Vasco and he was caught by the public,” stated PI Nayak.

“Accordingly, PSI Rohan Nageshkar, PSI Mayur Sawant and a police team went to the spot to verify the incident. Upon reaching at the spot at Kharewado, we found public gathered and they were seen assaulting one suspected person wearing black shirt, trousers and shoes.”

“On noticing the police, the crowd dispersed from the site. On enquiry, it was revealed that the said male person was trying to lift a minor boy but he was rescued by the public after the minor boy shouted for help. The suspect and the minor boy were brought at police station for enquiry.”

PI Nayak stated that the suspect disclosed his name as Dhen Jones (52) of Pondicherry.

“During enquiry, he was not giving satisfactory answers and he was looking mentally unstable. To avoid any future untoward incident, the suspect was sent for medical examination at SDH Chicalim to examine whether he is mentally unstable or otherwise.”

“After medical examination, the medical officer opined that he is mentally unfit and he is required to be lodged in IPHB for further treatment. The person will be lodged at the IPHB after getting appropriate order from the Judicial Magistrate Vasco," stated PI Nayak in the press release.
