Ironman turns Panaji into traffic nightmare; thousands caught in gridlock

PANAJI

Thousands of commuters and residents across Panaji and neighbouring areas were left grappling with traffic snarls, long delays and considerable inconvenience on Sunday as several roads were closed or diverted for the Ironman 70.3 Goa.

With traffic congestion spilling over to major roads and highways forming part of the race route, daily life came to a near standstill for many, leaving residents and motorists frustrated. Road closures and traffic diversions linked to the race led to long delays on several of these routes. The situation was compounded by the Oktoberfest event at the DB Ground and large crowds visiting cemeteries ahead of All Saints' Day observances.

Residents reported being stranded in traffic snarls for extended periods, with key roads witnessing severe congestion through much of the day. Many poured out their frustrations on social media. Panaji resident Anish Albuquerque described the combination of events as a "perfect recipe for absolute traffic chaos" in a social media post. "Octoberfest at DB Ground, the Ironman event and All Saints' Day celebrations all coincided today, creating the perfect recipe for absolute traffic chaos," he said.

According to Albuquerque, the already congested St Inez road came to a complete standstill as traffic volumes surged.

Several other residents questioned the wisdom of allowing multiple large-scale events on the same day without adequate planning for traffic management and the needs of local communities. Criticism was also directed at motorists who parked indiscriminately along narrow stretches of road, further reducing available carriageway space and worsening bottlenecks. While the Ironman race also drew praise for attracting international athletes and promoting Goa as a sporting destination, many locals said authorities needed to strike a better balance between hosting marquee events and ensuring the smooth movement of residents.
