On observing heavy siltation in the Galgibaga river as works on the twin bridges have begun, Fernandes also instructed the contractor to stop the work till a proper study is done on the ongoing project.
“There are many discrepancies while executing the works. Due to land-filling, lot of sand has accumulated at the mouth of Talpona and Galgibaga rivers, posing serious threats to the nearby buildings,” said Fernandes.
“We need development but not at the cost of human lives. The planned approach road on Maxem side, instead of an extended bridge portion,
has jeopardised lives of residents from Maxem and surrounding areas.”
“It is bad engineering and people want a bridge there and not a road by filling with mud which will block smooth flow of rainwater,” he added.
Captain of Ports vigilance officer Sagar Chandra Nair, PWD (highways) AE Laximikant Naik and Bridge Construction Agency MD Hasan, besides Canacona joint Mamlatdar representing Disaster Management Authority of Taluka were present during the inspection.
Later, Fernandes told media persons that he has directed the contractor to stop the work till further notice. “I welcome the development but not at the cost of human lives,” he said.
Fernandes also informed that CoP vigilance officer has summoned the contractor and PWD (highways) department officials to the CoP office
at Panaji.
