Issues of roadside food carts, poor water supply and bad condition of roads dominated the proceedings of Siolim-Marna gram sabha on Sunday.

The food cart owners and their supporters, particularly those who had erected three stalls at the sit-out near the St Anthony Church, Siolim demanded that the panchayat should give them permission to do business. However, several members did not agree to the proposal as the food carts created problem to the public and even to the motorists.

“Most of the food carts do business by the side of the road or on the footpaths making it difficult for public to use the footpath. Motorists also are inconvenienced due to the food carts,” a gram sabha member said.

The food cart owners then demanded an alternate place to carry on with their business.

Siolim-Marna Sarpanch, Monali Pednekar decided to have a special meeting in the panchayat along with the owners of the food carts, locals and the MLA to decide the fate of the food carts.

Locals said that several parts of the village were still not getting regular water supply. The sarpanch decided to hold a meeting and invite PWD engineers in the panchayat so that people could raise their queries with the engineers.

Several residents slammed the PWD for precarious condition of the main road from Siolim-Marna to Mapusa.

Several gram sabha members asked the panchayat to repair the road on priority and get it hot-mixed at the earliest.

The sarpanch informed the gram sabha that Director of Panchayat had issued a tender for door-to-door garbage collection in the village but nobody came forward to take it up.  The villagers urged the

sarpanch to request the

director of panchayat to re-float the tender with a lower quotation.

A resident, Gregory D’Souza requested the sarpanch to take up the matter of stray cattle with the animal welfare association so that steps can be taken to tackle the menace.

He also raised the issue of forming a website of the village panchayat and urged the secretary to apply his mind on the formation of the panchayat website.

A local, Vithal Salgaonkar said that the terrace of new panchayat ground plus one structure which was inaugurated just a year back has started leaking and urged the panchayat to hold the contractor accountable.
